A 7.0 magnitude e
arthquake rocked Haiti on Tuesday, January 13, 2010 causing widespread devastation to the capital Port-au-Prince. Haiti was already ravaged by extreme poverty and instability – when natural disaster of this magnitude strikes the suffering is unimaginable. This earthquake has left the Haitian’s without food, shelter or water. The country’s already inadequate utility, transportation and communication infrastructure lies shattered, stymieing relief efforts. Three million people have been affected by the earthquake; the death toll is estimated to exceed 100,000. The next few days (leading up to a month) are crucial in the relief efforts. Priority one is search and rescue for those who are trapped and may yet be spared. In the days following the focus will be on medical treatment for the injured; food and shelter and basic needs for homeless or vulnerable survivors, and restoring critical parts of the shattered infrastructure.
