Corey Barnes
Early Years
Corey grew up in Baltimore City, where as a teenager he met Christ while attending Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Corey pursued his education at Coppin State University where he graduated with a bachelors in Criminal Justice and a masters in Special Education. Corey then went on to teach for 10 years in Baltimore City’s public schools.
Professional Experience
He spent a good deal of his teaching career at New Song Academy, one of Baltimore City’s New Initiative schools. While at New Song Academy, Corey had the opportunity to serve as the Program Coordinator, forming a partnership with the Baltimore City Community College and starting GED programs for non-profit organizations. In time, Corey joined the adjunct faculty of the Baltimore City Community College.
In 2005, after leaving New Song Academy, Corey served as the Dean of Students of the NorthBay project, one of the largest public/private initiatives in Maryland’s history. There he provided expertise and leadership in integrating character development programming with academic instruction for youth with an urban background. He provided training in behavior modification, developing a positive peer culture. In addition, Corey coordinated relationships with the public schools that sent over 10,000 children to NorthBay each year.
In 2008, Corey became a graduate of the ministry ordination track at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he served both as the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries and as a member of the ministry leadership team.
Ministry at Grace
In 2008, Corey and his wife Rashema, responded to God’s call to co-lead Grace’s Baltimore City campus along with Bob and Sue Bingham.
Corey spends his spare time mentoring youth from the Baltimore City area, and attending his children’s games and practices. He may be found all over Baltimore and the surrounding area doing inspirational speaking to young adults.
Corey and Rashema were married in 1997, and have three children.
