The Great Commandment:Part 2 Cont’d (city)

Sunday, September 5th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Bob Bingham

Love your neighbor as yourself is “agape” love – loving others for His sake-actually loving God through loving others.  It is what God intended, but we need to understand the difference between being self-less and loving self in order to have the capacity to love others and respond.

The Great Commandment:Part 2-The What (city am)

Sunday, August 29th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Bob Bingham

Loving God is not a sideline sport, but a way of life requiring our full participation.  We have a response-ability: engaging our heart, soul and mind.  So, what does that mean exactly and what can we learn from  Jesus’ response to the Sadducees and the Pharisees in Matthew 22: 34-40?

The Great Commandment-Part 2-The How (city pm)

Sunday, August 29th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Bob Bingham

How do we love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength?   God desires that we would be broken before Him as David wrote in Psalm 51, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”  David speaks from a state of brokenness, understanding his sin and its impact on his relationship with God.  As we come face to face with a holy and loving God, what is the appropriate response we should have?

Parables: Kingdom (city)

Sunday, August 15th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Bob Bingham

Our “job description” is to continue to grow which occurs in two dimensions: One where it’s about me - learning how to assert my will to get what I want. The other dimension says I am here on earth for this defined period of time and belong to someone else.  Therefore, it is not about me, but to whom I belong that guides my life and helps me to understand the Kingdom that Jesus describes. It is not what the Kingdom of God is like, but what the kingdom of God is.  What does that mean in the present and the future?

Scripture: Luke 11:20 and Luke 19:11-12

Parables: Lost and Found (city)

Sunday, August 1st, 2010 Mary Lou

by Phil Stetler

It’s human nature to find what we lose and so the woman was no different than us - she wanted to find the lost coin.  What does this parable tell us about God’s kingdom and what is valuable to our Heavenly Father?  Does it expand your world view of what God wants us to be about?
Scripture: Luke 15:8-10 and 1-2.

Travelers (city)

by Ben Abell

Consider a different look at the parable known as the Good Samaritan…..What did each of the individuals see as they came to the man at the side of the road and how did they respond?  The Robbers, the Priest, the Levite and the Samaritan.  Jesus presents a radical view of “neighboring” through this parable and an opportunity for us to think about our own response.

Luke 10: 25-37

Parables: Great Banquet -What’s Your Excuse? (city)

Sunday, July 18th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Phil Stetler

If we are honest, at some time we have made excuses because we didn’t want to go to a certain party or event.  What about the excuses of those who were invited to the banquet?  What should be our response as believers and as a church to this invitation?
Scripture – Luke 14: 12-24

Parables: Mustard Seed (city)

Sunday, July 11th, 2010 Mary Lou

by Corey Barnes and Bob Bingham

Look in the Book.
In the Book is a story.
The story is a parable.

Listen to the parable.
In the parable is a truth.
The truth is eternal.

Parables are more about our hearts than our intellectual ability to understand them and offer us a literal meaning as well as a deeper spiritual meaning.  In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus paints a picture of the development of His kingdom. He wants us to see our potential in the kingdom and to think bigger – beyond our humanness! How do we produce the kingdom in the world and position ourselves individually and as a church?

Luke 13:18-19
